چکیده

In recent years, samples pressurized in diamond anvil cells are being irradiated with energetic ion beams to investigate the response of solids to simultaneous exposure to ions and high pressure. The effects are numerous, e.g. inducing phase transitions far from their usual stability regime or creating and stabilizing phases that are normally not stable at ambient conditions, depending on the investigated material [1, 2]. A common method to calibrate the pressure in the DAC consists of adding a small ruby chip together with the actual sample into the pressure chamber [3]. The positions of the two luminescence lines R1 and R2 (694.28 nm and 692.85 nm) serve as pressure indicator [4]. However during the irradiation experiment, the ruby is exposed to the same radiation as the sample itself. Because the luminescence method is applied before and after irradiation to control the pressure inside the cell, the influence of ion radiation on the function of ruby as pressure calibrant had to be investigated.

The hBN to wBN phase transition modified by heavy ion irradiation

Boron nitride (BN) shows similarities to carbon, having a hexagonal (graphite-like) structure (hBN) and a cubic diamond type (cBN). Under ambient temperature conditions, hBN transforms irreversibly into wurtzitic BN (wBN) at pressures above 10.8 GPa [1]. We investigated the influence of ion irradiation on this displacive phase transition using in situ Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray di...

Influence of parameters and kinetic study of nickel (II) and cadmium (III) metals on Dalbergia derived adsorbent

Background and aims: From the past studies, it has been proved that consumption of heavy metals by humans may cause several chronicle problems like cancer, kidney and liver damage, high blood pressure and low blood pressure problems and etc. So, it has become very crucial to remove these heavy metals from industrial wastewater. The aim of this study was to find out a low cost a...

Induction of cancer stem-like cells in A549 cells after exposure to carbon ions and X-rays

Background: Cancer stem-like cells (CSCs) play a crucial role in the initiation, progression, and recurrence of cancer. Evidence indicates that the high linear energy transfer (LET) carbon ion beam is more effective against CSCs than the conventional X-ray beam. Carbon ion radiotherapy is considered as a promising cancer strategy, however, information about whether, or not, new CSCs are induced...

Swift Heavy Ion Irradiation of Pressurized Boron Nitride

Recently, it has been shown that irradiation with swift heavy ions can trigger [1] or also prevent [2] phase transitions in oxides at static high pressure and outside the equilibrium stability field [3]. At GSI, several experiments were conducted in order to probe the influence of applied pressure of up to 25 GPa on the irradiation behaviour of various materials [2, 3]. We decided to study effe...

POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ION MASS SPECTRA OF RING - SUBSTITUTED NITROBENZENES

The 70 ev positive and negative ion mass spectra of ring-substituted nitrobenzenes were studied. The influence of the substituent group on the fragmentation modes of the molecular ions is discussed. The effect of pressure in the formation of negative ions was also studied. As expected, the ratio of fragment ions to negative molecular ions decreased with increasing pressure in ion source.
